History of the Meißen District

Located along the scenic Elbe River in the state of Saxony, the Meißen District (Meissen District) is a breathtaking blend of deep-rooted history, rolling vineyards and architectural marvels.

The historical cradle of Saxony

Often referred to as the "cradle of Saxony", the region holds immense historical weight. The city of Meißen was founded in 929 by King Henry the Bird-catcher and became the center of the Margraviate of Meissen, the forerunner of modern Saxony. The iconic Albrechtsburg Castle, built in the late 15th century, stands proudly above the Elbe and is considered Germany's oldest castle used as a palace.

Meissen Porcelain and the “White Gold”

In 1710, Augustus the Strong established the world-famous Meissen Porcelain Factory inside Albrechtsburg (later relocated nearby), making the district globally synonymous with luxurious “White Gold”.
